What makes an ATS resume template safe?

An ATS-friendly resume avoids elements that confuse parsers. No multi-column layouts, no tables, no sidebar text that could be re-ordered, no icons that replace words. Every heading, entry, date, and bullet is plain text, ordered top-to-bottom in the DOM.

When a resume passes through systems like Workday, Taleo, Greenhouse, or Lever, the parser extracts name, contact details, employers, titles, dates, education, and skills. If those fields are in a predictable place, they parse cleanly. If they are hidden behind visual tricks, they may be skipped or scrambled.

1

Keep the format plain

Single column, no tables, no shapes. Plain text and rules only. This is what every ATS expects.

2

Use standard section headings

"Experience", "Education", "Skills" — not "Career Journey" or "Where I've Been". Parsers look for the standard names.

3

List dates consistently

Use "Month YYYY – Month YYYY" throughout. Avoid "Summer 2021" or "3 years" — those break date parsing.
